DUBPLATES FROM THE LAMP VOL 1

A 12 track beats & breaks album (1h 10m 17s) — released October 9th 2000 on PORK RECORDINGS

'In this glorious age of the corporate theme pub, where cheap liquor and junk music are the order of the day, one bar has stood firm against the tide of tripe. This little gem is a place called The Lamp. A place where all civilised freaks are welcome, far removed from the brawling boozy mob. Here a music policy, slightly leftfield of catholic, is actively encouraged. In such an atmosphere, I have regularly played all the tracks on this compilation. Each was originally an unsolicited demo and as time went by, the list of these 'lamp dubplates' grew. So much so that I'm now the proud compiler of said tracks. Apologies for the lack of any defining style or genre but, like the lamp, I have little time for such narrow puritanism. Best served when you meet the cheese...: Porky, head of Pork Recordings. The concept of this compilation is simple: Pork Recordings, the much loved exponents of downtempo chill out music run a club night at a venue called The Lamp in Hull, New Yorkshire. Label head Porky, the resident DJ, who had pioneered the use of CD mixers in clubs (probably due to his laziness when it came to lugging bags of records around) was therefore was able to play CDRs that had been sent to him as demos. Not all the artists got a deal but at least they now have something released unto the World. The exceptions are Banabila who provide the closing track, will have an album released by Pork, also in October and Unforscene, who have since been signed to Kudos Records and are making great progress in the world of phuture jazz. They recently played at The Big Chill Enchanted Garden 2000 and have released two EPs to critical acclaim.'

Dubplates is a fingers up to corporate music culture. Just play your dubplate out, in this case at Pork Records Hull local The Lamp, and if it kicks get it released to Joe Public. Result? Brilliant! Difficult to categorise - the word various meaning just that, with everything making an appearance, jazz, break beat, dub and ambient. Highlights for me include the cool jazz fusion of Unforscene and the majestic sounds of chilled maestro Thomas Kennedy. Taking on the corporate compilation blandness Dubplates is a slice of original life. Worth a listen. - Kate Wildwood DJ
