Tetris
A 9 track beats & breaks album (1h 1m 25s) — released April 2nd 2001 on PORK RECORDINGS
Recently, artists from Hull's Pork Recordings have been on a busman's holiday to Russia, which makes sense given that the two places share a combination of bitter weather and questionable town planning. One of the results is this album from Muscovites Vlad Lozinski, Pasha Hotin and Dima Rubezhov, collectively known as Tetris. Like the Pork crew, they make music that is diametrically opposed to their surroundings; hence their eponymous debut is an album of slo-mo, digitised lounge funk that, at times, is up there with World of Apples and Thievery Corporation. Take the highlight 'Mellow', a dubby, tripped out groove with booming subs, silky Rhodes and off-key synths that showcases the trio's blunted loungecore approach to great effect. And they're nothing if not versatile: 'Bye-Bye Baby' is a jazz number in the St Germain style, 'Nocturne M.T' is dream-like come-down bliss and 'Two Hours' is sub-acid jazz. At times a touch polite, 'Tetris' is nonetheless most worthy of your attention. - Rob Wood Jockey Slut
The beats here range from hip-hop to trip-hop to acid jazz, all set deep in the groove and free of the relentless techno thunk of robo drummer. Into this groove, Tetris weaves a luxurious tapestry of live and synthesized sounds, rich with reminders of 1970s Fender Rhodes and Moogs, of Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Hancock during the optimistic dawn of jazz fusion. A playful, delightful and thoroughly sunny session from a Russian trio discovered by Pork DJs visiting Moscow. - Orange County Register
The Moscow - Hull axis is one of music's least explored highways. But possibly, with the release of Tetris' eponymous debut, not for long. Tetris are three Russian beat comrades named Dima, Pasha and Vlad (natch) signed to Pork after the Yorkshiremen jollied to Moscow's Propaganda club last year and spotted the trio at work. The result of this Anglo-Russian coupling is a cool, beat-heavy lesson in laidbackery, the only hint to its heritage being a picture on the sleeve of a lurid tracksuit bearing the 1980 Moscow Olympics crest. Fans of Mr Scruff, Thievery Corporation or Lemon Jelly, among others, will lap up the cheeky, funk-fused lo-fi, sampledelica on board, as will anyone who enjoys their music on the rocks and suitably chilled. Like their namesake, Tetris are simple, block-rocking and unaviodably addictive. - Jane Fitz-Gerald 7
